After they walked for four days (40 kilometer a day) during the Nijmegen Vierdaagse a group of 11 young soldiers of the Royal Canadian Dragoons (RCD) visited Leeuwarden. The capital of Friesland who was liberated 71 years ago by the ‘grandfathers’ of this guys. The visite (on Sunday july 24) was organized by Koos Pot, Marco Kalmijn (chairman Canadian Liberator Foundation) and Yme Westra. The hosts were Aukje Mulder, Alet and Piet Prins. They showed them the sunny innercity of Leeuwarden. The group had 'koffie met oranjekoek' at the office of Marco, a citywalk, a great lunch in de Prinsentuin (Koperen Tuin), an interesting boattrip trough the canals (Praamvaarders Leeuwarden) and a tasteful bbq (thanks to Marco and Yme). Captain Nathan S. MacIntosh called it 'an unforgettable day. ,,It was awesome!’’ he said.  Arriva Touring took care of the transport from and to de Harskamp, where the Canadians lived during their stay in Holland. Monday (july 25) the men of the RCD went back home.(Photo's Jan-Sjoerd Geertsma).
